Viscosity of Automatic Transmission Fluid - ATF
ATF III Mineral Automatic Transmission Fluid
Description
Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is a special lubricant used in automatic gearboxes, hydraulic-power-assisted steering systems and in the transfer cases of 4WD systems of cars and trucks. Some manual transmissions also use this fluid. Besides gear lubrication, the liquid is designed for optimal functioning of all transmission parts like the torque converter.
ATF is not an oil but a mixture of various chemical compounds containing a large number of additives. It must fulfill manyf specifications. Other than lube oils, ATFs are colored (red or green) to distinguish them from other liquids used in a vehicle. ATFs are specified mainly according to vehicle manufacturers' directives, common are DEXRON (General Motors) or MERCON (Ford).
